In 1993, the primary production of aluminum in the U.S. declined by 8.6% from 1992 levels. A total 3,695 thousand metric tons of primary aluminum were produced in smelting plants across the U.S. This production level represents approximately 88% of the total U.S. production capacity. The decrease in aluminum production in 1993 was due to global oversupply conditions which were primarily a result of large inexpensive supplies being made available to world markets by republics of the former Soviet Union.
