Energy Consumption in soaking pits varies from 200,000 Btu/net ton to 2 million Btu/net ton. This variation is due largely to variations in the temperature of the charged ingots. Other factors affecting fuel consumption are the furnace design, insulation, use of recuperators and regenerators, proper controls, optimal utilization of the hearth space, and proper scheduling to minimize holding. The rolling requirements for blooming and slabbing mills averages 32-45 kWh/ton with power requirements for the very large mills on the order of several thousand horsepower per rolling stand.
