Energy requirements for tundish and nozzle preheating range from 0.2-0.5 MMBtu/ton of cast steel, with nozzle preheating making up only a very small fraction of the total. There are three applications for heating in continuous casting.1. Heating of the tundish refractory before casting to dry the refractory, reduce hydrogen pickup, and to minimize the heat loss of the initial liquid steel to the tundish on filling.

2. Heating of the submerged entry nozzle before casting to eliminate the risk of freezing of metal in the nozzle at the beginning of casting.

3. Heating the tundish during casting to maintain temperature of the molten steel and to minimize the superheat required in the primary steelmaking process.
