Even though the primary production of aluminum in the U.S. was down 8.6% in 1993, the total supply of aluminum was up 7.1% from the previous year. The total supply of aluminum was 8,966 thousand metric tons in 1993. The additional source of aluminum was made up mainly of imports (59% increase from 1992) and second recovery (6.8% increase from 1992). The drastic increase in imports is a sign of the cheap aluminum being exported from the republics of the former Soviet Union which, at one point, was less expensive than U.S. produced scrap.
